Mr. Senson has been a committed and serious Goju-ryu karate student for nearly 17 years, under Sensei JRP Bassels and Sensei J Kenney. Martial arts have always been a fascination for him even as a young child where he would follow along to karate VHS tapes and learn to count in Japanese. He’s had exposure to a number of additional arts including judo, Uechi-ryu karate, kickboxing, aikido and tai chi. He also currently trains in kobudo (traditional weapons).
Mr. Senson views the martial arts as a mechanism of self-discovery, refinement and continuous improvement. He believes the benefits of training run much deeper than most people think, and it’s given him a new lens with which to view the world. It has shed some light on the nature of human behaviour, conflict and emotion; and how to balance and navigate effectively as we experience the ups and downs in our lives. Training in traditional martial arts literally rewires our brains so we become better versions of ourselves in many different ways. This is why Mr. Senson continues to train and teach Goju-ryu karate, as he hopes it will have as profound an impact on other’s lives as it does on his.
